Thankyou to Wrest Point

When you live in the north of Tasmania and you travel south to Hobart to stay the night, you want to stay somewhere comfortable, somewhere enjoyable. A place with a fantastic view of the magnificent harbour or beautiful views of the majestic Mt Wellington; a place with great restaurants for dining out with friends and business associates, or that can offer a quiet meal in your room with a superb selection of dining; a place with a choice of lively entertainment or somewhere secluded for a quiet drink. Wrest Point Hotel Casino offers all this and so much more!!

But not many people realise that one of the many other things that Wrest Point offers is free accommodation for Guide Dogs. Now one might argue that every hotel should offer free accommodation for Guide Dogs and I'm sure they may well do so, but not quite like this.

Perhaps we should explain... Guide Dogs Tasmania commenced developing our very own Guide Dog Program in Tasmania in 1999. Prior to this Guide Dogs Tasmania had had a long and very supportive relationship with Wrest Point, however, in 1999 Wrest Point agreed to take that relationship to a whole new level.

With a dedicated Guide Dog Program here in Tasmania, our Guide Dog staff travel extensively throughout the state. Whilst our Guide Dog staff are based in the North, there is always much to be done in the South as well. This is where Wrest Point have been of invaluable assistance to our Association. Wrest Point provides free accommodation, not just for Guide Dogs, but also for our Guide Dog Instructors as well.

Our Guide Dog Instructors are treated to all the warmth and hospitality of this magnificent Hotel Casino through the generous sponsorship of Wrest Point. And while it's always nice to stay in a great hotel with all the very best amenities, there is nothing quite like staying with close friends. Again, we turn to Wrest Point. How, you may well ask? Our relationship with Wrest Point is much more than just a sponsorship; it is a true partnership. For our staff, staying at Wrest Point is the next best thing to being at home with family.

Wrest Point knows all about what it takes to raise Guide Dog puppies as they were our first (and to date only) sponsor to undertake the arduous task of participating in raising the Guide Dog Puppy they sponsored. In conjunction with one of our more experienced volunteer Puppy Raising families, Wrest Point staff actively participated in the process of raising a tiny eight week old puppy to become a fully fledged Guide Dog. Management and staff at Wrest Point are intimately aware with the enormous amount of hardwork required to turn a tiny little puppy into a Guide Dog.

Guide Dog Zelle, who affectionately became known by both the Tasmanian public and the media as the Wrest Point puppy, is now a fully qualified working Guide Dog. Her success is due in no small part to the efforts of Wrest Point Hotel Casino.

Wrest Point Hotel Casino have contributed to our Guide Dog Program in so many different ways. They are currently the major sponsor of our Guide Dog Training Program. When our puppies move from their "L" plates to their "P's", it is with the tremendous assistance of Wrest Point Hotel Casino.

The support of our close friends at Wrest Point has been instrumental in the success of our Guide Dog Program and we are deeply grateful for their support and their close company in the journey to date.

Arriving at Wrest Point is very much like arriving at the home friends. If you would like to enjoy the company of friends, we encourage you to stay at Wrest Point Hotel Casino. After all, who wouldn't want to stay with friends who have the best location in town?

A message from Wrest Point

For many years Wrest Point has supported Guide Dogs Tasmanias puppy training programs through in-kind support of accommodation for Guide Dog staff, and support of puppy training programs.

Our involvement with training the Wrest Point puppy, Zelle, in 2000 was an amazing experience for all our staff and guests. It showed us the work that goes in behind training a guide dog, and the importance of these little helpers in the community.

As an equal opportunity employer and entertainment and accommodation provider, Wrest Point is continuously improving its facilities for all of its visitors, and values the input and feedback having a guide dog in training on-site provides.

Our staff learn when to, and when not to, interact with the guide dog; how to work with a guide dog on the premises and the importance of guide dogs in society.

Our customers and guests also benefit from the presence of a guide dog in training through interaction with both the dog and its family.

We would recommend this program to all qualified citizens and businesses.

We are pleased to continue our association for Guide Dogs Tasmanias puppy training programs.
