Occupational therapy services include comprehensive assessment and specialised training in all aspects of Activities of Daily Living (ADL), including leisure interests, to people who are blind or vision impaired.
Particular emphasis is placed upon maintaining or developing independence and safety within the home environment.
Some of the more common areas of difficulty experienced by people who are blind or vision impaired, which may be addressed during an Occupational Therapy assessment are:
Communication
Use of the telephone, writing, telling the time and operating appliances in the home.
Cooking
Operating stove dials, pouring, labelling, slicing/dicing vegetables.
Personal Management
Grooming, clothing identification, eating neatly.
Home Safety
Using power points, managing heaters.
Leisure Interests
Training may include:
Making the best use of remaining vision through adaptations to lighting, use of contrasting colours and bold labelling;
Specific helpful techniques to increase safety and independence when doing tasks that are difficult; and
Trial and purchase of specialised aids and equipment that increase independence or ease of management.
Our Occupational Therapists also provide a consultancy service for professionals, employers and the general public on issues related to the functional implications of blindness and vision impairment.
We are able to provide a comprehensive worksite assessment service with particular emphasis on safety, ergonomics and lighting.
