What are the benefits of attending the Low Vision Clinic?
The client has the opportunity to attend an initial one hour assessment session with the Consulting Optometrist.
The Consulting Optometrist will make a thorough assessment of the remaining vision and, if appropriate, prescribe low vision equipment. Information, advice and support is also provided by the Consulting Optometrist and the Program Manager.
The prescribed low vision equipment is provided to the client for a loan period. This enables the client to try the equipment at home prior to purchasing. A review session is usually conducted four weeks after initial assessment to determine whether the equipment and advice has been useful to the client. The client may purchase any equipment they have found beneficial.
Low Vision equipment can be purchased directly through the Low Vision Clinic. Referral for other RGDAT services will also be offered to clients.
What do Low Vision Clinic services cost?
The Consulting Optometrist receives the standard Medicare fee. Services provided by RGDAT are free of charge to clients. However, a claim may be made when appropriate to Government agencies, employers, training groups or insurance bodies.
There is a charge for equipment purchased through the Low Vision Clinics.
Who can refer to the Low Vision Clinic?
Clients are usually referred to the Low Vision Clinic by their Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, Community Health Professional or the RGDAT Program Manager.
A current report from the client's ophthalmologist and optometrist is always required prior to assessment.
