RGDT provides services to children, teenagers and families in the home and community.
We firmly believe that a solid foundation of Lifeskills is best developed in the home and community environment at the age appropriate developmental stage.
In order to achieve this goal, families require reliable, high quality information, support, resources and instruction. RGDT has a fully integrated program, which provides support to families of children who are blind or vision impaired – the ‘Lifeskills FIRST Program’.
There are two main components:
Lifeskills Program for Children and Adolescents
Provides skills and strategies for the child in key Lifeskills areas including Orientation and Mobility, Independent Living Skills, Adaptive Technology, Low Vision Services, and Social Skills.
FIRST Program
FIRST stands for Family, Information, Resources, Support and Training. This program includes the essential information, resources, support and training to empower the family to assist and provide the essential guidance required for the child to achieve an independent fulfilling lifestyle.
The Lifeskills Program and FIRST Program are fully integrated, so that the child who is blind or vision impaired is encouraged to develop independent skills and attitudes throughout childhood and adolescence, under the informed guidance and support of their family.
